Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck-QuickStep) sale de amarillo de los Pirineos aunque el bravo ciclista francés dio sus primeros síntomas de debilidad en Prat d’Albis, mientras que Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ) demostró ser el más fuerte de los favoritos.
La etapa fue para Simon Yates (Mitchelton-Scott), segunda para él, un premio que intentó alcanzar Mikel Landa, tercero, después del trabajo del Movistar Team. Pinot atacó y nadie pudo seguir su rueda, solo Bernal aguantó hasta que el colombiano cedió; Alaphilippe sufrió y Thomas reaccionó al final para distanciar al líder.
La general queda en un pañuelo pues solo 39″ separan a Thomas, segundo, de Buchmann, sexto, con Kruijswuijk, Pinot y Bernal de por medio. Alaphilippe aguanta con un minuto y medio.
