Herald Sun Tour: Chaves ejerce de patrón en la etapa reina

Después de un año en blanco, Esteban Chaves (Mitchelton-Scott) ha encontrado por fin la senda de la victoria, superadas también las lesiones que lo tuvieron en el dique seco durante la primera mitad de la temporada 2017. El colombiano ha ganado la etapa reina del Herald Sun Tour y es el nuevo líder de la general, que deja casi vista para sentencia.

Con un puerto final de casi 20 kilómetros, el colombiano atacó a 17 de meta y no hubo quien pudiera seguirle la estela. Fue aumentando las distancias y llegó en solitario a la línea de meta con 42 segundos sobre Alexander Evans y 1’09» por delante de Rubén Guerreiro, que abrió un pequeño grupo de corredores.

Es la primera victoria para Chaves desde Il Lombardia 2016, y el propio corredor ha afirmado que su lejano ataque era un plan a medias para él y el equipo: «Quedaba mucho cuando ataqué, pero la idea era hacerlo desde lejos. Si me alcanzaban, teníamos a los otros compañeros ya que traemos un equipo fuerte», ha dicho tras la etapa.

Ya sólo le queda una etapa para sumar, también, la general de la ronda australiana: «Será un día duro y todo el mundo atacará. Necesitamos mantener la carrera bajo control», ha explicado. La etapa empieza y acaba en Kinglake y tiene un trazado durísimo y rompepiernas, sin ningún metro llano y con tres puertos antes de encarar la subida final a meta. Son cuatro vueltas a un circuito, con 152 kilómetros de recorrido total.
