Wout Poels ha tomado hoy el papel de jefe en la Vuelta a Andalucía. El neerlandés ha ganado en solitario la segunda etapa con final en el Alto de las Allanadas. Es el tercer ciclista que inscribe su nombre en la lista de ganadores del corto pero explosivo puerto jiennense, sumándose a Chris Froome y Sergio Pardilla.
Poels se viste además de líder con este triunfo, que ha cimentado con dos ataques en el último kilómetro. Mil metros finales que se han hecho especialmente largos. Poels ha cazado solo a Wellens, que iba por delante, y luego se ha ido en solitario a por la victoria en la última recta.
Esta vez Astana ha cogido el testigo de Sky en la jornada de ayer y llevado el peso de persecución de una fuga que ha sido mucho más numerosa: nueve corredores se han marchado, con la presencia de Álvaro Cuadros (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA), Diego Rubio (Burgos-BH) y Enrique Sanz (Euskadi-Murias).

Precisamente Rubio ha sido, junto a Alexis Gougeard (AG2R La Mondiale) y Pascal Eeckhorn (Lotto NL-Jumbo), quien más ha resistido al empuje del pelotón. Pero el final era demasiado duro como para pensar que podrían culminar la aventura. Rubio ha soltado a sus dos compañeros en las primeras rampas del puerto final, con apenas un minuto de ventaja sobre un grupo desbocado.
El primero que ha roto las hostilidades ha sido Jakob Fuglsang, el ‘capo’ del Astana, que se ha movido a dos y medio de meta, ya en la zona más dura. Poco después ha ido Mikel Landa, que ha salido con Wellens y perseguido por Wout Poels. El vasco ha llegado con bastante soltura a la rueda de Fuglsang, demostrando pues que está bien en este debut en 2018. Y una vez reagrupado todo con una decena de favoritos, Wellens ha vuelto a salir en solitario y Chris Froome se ha quedado cortado.
Tampoco era ninguna sorpresa que Thomas Boudat (Direct Energie) no iba a mantener el jersey rojo de líder. Con buen criterio y teniendo en cuenta que hay una nueva llegada masiva en puertas, el francés se ha desconectado a falta de 10 kilómetros para meta, antes de entrar en La Guardia.
La tercera etapa comenzará en la localidad jiennense de Mancha Real y terminará en Herrera (Sevilla), en lo que a buen seguro será el último sprint del pelotón en una etapa muy cómoda a priori siempre que el viento no afecte.
